The 18th edition of LO SCHERMO DELL’ARTE, a film and contemporary art festival, will be held from 12 to 16 November in Florence at the Cinema La Compagnia and other venues, presenting a selection of the best recent art films and documentaries on contemporary art.
The programme also includes an exhibition in which artists Valentina Furian and Claudia Losi will exhibit two virtual reality works, BITE (2025) and Anìmule vr. Il mondo sottile (2025), at the Strozzina in Palazzo Strozzi.
Focus 2025 will be dedicated to Moroccan artist Randa Maroufi, with five films made between 2015 and 2025, including “L’MINA”, set in the mining town of Jerada, winner of the Leitz Cine Discovery Prize for Short Film at the Semaine de la Critique at the last Cannes Film Festival.
The Festival will open with the live documentary Non-Aligned Newsreels: Fragments, specially created for Lo schermo dell’arte by Serbian artist and filmmaker Mila Turajlic, while the programme will bring together many Italian premieres, including The Tree of Authenticity (2025) by Congolese artist Sammy Baloji, BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions (2024) by American artist Khalil Joseph, Sleep #2 (2024) by Romanian filmmaker Radu Jude, and Fierté Nationale: De Jéricho vers Gaza (2025) by Belgian artist Sven Augustijnen.
The Festival will close with the world premiere of Matteo Frittelli’s documentary Due qui / To Hear (2025), which recounts the project created by Tuscan artist Massimo Bartolini for the Italian Pavilion at the last Venice Biennale.
The 14th edition of the VISIO European Programme on Artists’ Moving Images, a programme curated by Leonardo Bigazzi dedicated to artists under 35 who use moving images, will feature eight artists selected from an open call launched in June, which received 156 applications from 54 different countries. Meanwhile, the VISIO Production Fund will preview works by artists Valentin Noujaïm and Peng Zuqiang.
With the Under 30 Audience Award for Best Film at the 18th edition, Lo schermo dell’arte confirms its focus on the younger generation of viewers, who will have free access to the screenings thanks to the contribution of main sponsor Gucci and can actively participate in the Festival by voting for their favourite film through the Lo schermo dell’arte app.
