On 8 September, REF2026 kicks off the opening week of its 41st edition, which will be a feature of Roman life until November, featuring Sofia Nappi, the internationally acclaimed choreographer whose work has been presented by some of the world’s leading dance companies and cultural institutions. Together with her company KOMOCO, she opens the Festival with an evening pairing her acclaimed work DODI with the Italian premiere of her new creation, CHORA – The Void and the Origin.
On 9 September, the Festival presents the Italian premiere of Non puoi contare l’infinito (You Cannot Count Infinity), Caterina Barbieri’s new composition for orchestra, electronics and voices, performed together with ONCEIM, the renowned French orchestra dedicated to musical creation, experimentation and improvisation. Opening the evening is Constellation by Christian Marclay, winner of the Golden Lion at the 2011 Venice Biennale Arte for his now-iconic work The Clock.
On 10 and 11 September, the Festival moves to Teatro India, where Romaeuropa Festival and Short Theatre once again join forces to present the Italian premiere of L’echo, the latest creation by French-Algerian choreographer Nacera Belaza. This powerful duet features the artist herself on stage alongside Valérie Dréville.
Closing REF2026’s opening week on 14 September is another encounter between dance and music with SUMMERLAND by Benjamin Millepied. Created through a dialogue with the voice and presence of French pop star November Ultra, the performance imagines an ethereal, luminous and welcoming landscape inhabited by the singer—performing live in Italy for the very first time—alongside the dancers of Paris Danse. Part of the celebrations marking the exclusive Rome–Paris twinning, SUMMERLAND unfolds within a minimalist scenic environment inspired by the infinite horizons of James Turrell, where music and movement evoke a profound sense of serenity, intimacy and shared experience.
