The 14th edition of SHE Devil arrives at the MACRO Museum in Rome (starting April 29). The videoart showreel was conceived by Stefania Miscetti in 2006 as a collaborative curatorial project designed to explore, with irony and lightheartedness, the devilish and bizarre spirit with which the female artistic experience permeates everyday life, subverting its rules and offering new perspectives on the world. The title is inspired by a Marvel heroine and Susan Seidelman’s famous 1989 film, and has embodied a rebellious and visionary attitude from the very beginning.
Each edition of SHE DEVIL involves Italian and international artists and curators, from the youngest to the most established, inviting them to explore a specific theme through the language of video. The exhibition presents itself as an open platform where diverse works and critical perspectives coexist in a multi-voiced discourse, giving shape to the multiplicity of female worlds and visions.
SHE DEVIL 14 addresses one of the primary emotions: fear. Starting from the urgencies and critical issues of our daily lives, the works on display explore this feeling through a variety of viewpoints and forms—artist films, video performances, documentaries, animations—examining its various manifestations and modes of representation.
The visual narrative places fear in dialogue with multiple aspects of existence: transience, violence, the relationship with nature and the territory, identity, and the sense of belonging in its personal, social, and political dimensions. What emerges is a multifaceted journey that not only illuminates the contemporary facets of fear but also imagines overcoming it, opening up prospects for liberation.

SHE DEVIL was founded in 2006 based on an idea by Stefania Miscetti. Following the first two editions (2006 and 2007) with a limited number of curators and artists, since 2009 the exhibition has involved more curators, consolidating its success with a special international edition at the MNAC Museum of Contemporary Art in Bucharest. In 2010, it participated in the exhibition La Follia dell’arte at the Ravello Festival, while in 2011 the fifth edition was presented at MACRO in Rome. The sixth edition in 2014 confirmed the media’s attention, and in 2015, in addition to the seventh edition, the first two stops of SHE DEVIL on tour took place in Terni and Belfast. In 2016, the eighth edition was held alongside SHE DEVIL. Leipziger Edition: Home at Galerie KUB. In 2017, the tour arrived in Lithuania with the ninth edition in Vilnius. In 2018, in addition to the tenth edition, selections from the series were presented in Rome and at the Centro Pecci. In 2019, SHE DEVIL 11 was accompanied by the publication of a book-catalog chronicling the eleven editions, published by CURA. In 2021 and 2022, the twelfth edition took place at MAXXI and at Studio, respectively. In 2023, on the occasion of the fourth edition of BIENALSUR, a special edition takes place at MUNTREF in Buenos Aires, featuring over fifty videos from past editions and a previously unseen selection of Argentine works.
