From June 24-28, 2025, the fourth edition of Volcanic Attitude, a festival of contemporary culture, art and science that hosts artists and scientists in a program of research, exploration, lectures and performances between Naples and the Aeolian Islands, comes to life. The traveling festival curated and directed by Helga Franza, Susanna Ravelli and Giulia Restifo, will renew the route from Naples to Vulcano, including for the first time the island of Stromboli.
A journey through those places and territories where matter is transformed, energy is released and invisible forces shape reality. From the porous lightness of pumice to the mirror-like density of obsidian, to the expansion and contraction cycles of the Earth’s crust and cosmological theories on the pulsation of the universe, the volcanic landscape in fact allows the research of artists and experts from various scientific disciplines to be related. A device for investigating the ways in which we act and think and how these change in relation to place and the tools we use.
The festival thus aims to reflect on the invisible forces that govern matter: the heat that expands, the pressure that compresses, the energy that transforms and generates new balances. The magma that pulsates in the bowels of the planet, through volcanoes, crosses the earth’s crust and intertwines with our ideas, insights and visions. Volcanic Attitude 2025 invites in this way to perceive the transformation in order to tune in to the Earth’s frequencies and let the magmatic energy of change pass through us.
Volcanic Attitude 2025 opens on June 24 in the center of the city of Naples, with a visit to the Real Museo Mineralogico by the museum’s technical director Carmela Petti, then walking to the headquarters of CASA (Center for the Arts of the Scene and Audiovisual) and attending a screening of the film Shaken Grounds Shifting Skies, by the art collective Shaken Grounds and a talk by Valerio Acocella, a UniRoma3 Volcanologist. This is followed by embarkation to the Aeolian Islands aboard the ferry Laurana on which it will be possible to watch the installation Inviolability of Female Body, Gran Pavese by artist Margherita Morgantin and the screening of the film Stromboli (1992) by Roman Signer and Stefan Rohner.
The 25th at dawn sees Roman Signer’s performance Aktion mit Stiefel – Action with Boots on the island of Stromboli. Arrival on Vulcano is scheduled in the morning, while the talk Magnetica⭈Magmatica with artists Federica Di Carlo and Margherita Morgantin, along with volcanologist Francesco Sortino, takes place in the evening.
The day on the 26th will be marked in the morning by Roman Signer’s performance Aktion mit Pfanne – Action with Pan and the talk Rocks, Stones and Sea inhabits in the afternoon with artists Francesco Cavaliere and Luca Trevisani, together with naturalist Pietro Lo Cascio.
