From 3 to 6 August, the MAUL! – The Contemporary Castle of Mola di Bari opens its doors to the public for the collective exhibition resulting from the twelfth edition of Con.divisione, an artistic residency project curated by Fabio Caccuri and organized by Officina dell’Arte – APS that focuses on transdisciplinarity and on connecting the material and immaterial cultural heritage of the territory (South, Apulia, Mola di Bari) with contemporary languages.
This edition of the residency will have, for the first time, a topic: Cultural Hegemony, as a tool for reinventing cultural forms and practices.
As Antonio Gramsci argued, hegemony is not simply an exercise in coercion, but a form of control that occurs through the building of consensus and the sharing of dominant ideas by the masses. Gramsci developed the concept of cultural hegemony during the period of fascism, believing that a culture that was the voice and thought of the subaltern and oppressed classes, an instrument of rebellion and struggle, was fundamental.
Sharing becomes the most promising form of cultural hegemony to start from. Through regeneration practices, taking care of territories and social relations, reinventing urban spaces and creating places that intercept emerging needs. These practices are self-generating, transforming voids into reinvented spaces, and becoming instruments of change.
“Through hybrid cultural practices escape the rules of the market and capitalism” – explains the curator Fabio Caccuri- “we wanted to give space in this edition of Con.divisione to initiatives that place the accent on the common good and on the social impact, transforming the spaces of the MAUL! and generating new relationships and cultural dynamics, capable of offering new alphabets to tell a world in transition”.
The artists in residence focused their research on the relationship between art and activism. In particular, by exploring Gramsci’s thought and declining it in the light of new contemporary issues: migratory flows, gender policies, new forms of poverty and the fragility of the ecosystem; At the same time they experimented with new approaches to relate to traditional practices.
