Among the guests of the rich programme of Videocittà, a festival dedicated to digital languages that from 13 to 16 July was hosted in the evocative spaces of the Gazometro in Rome, was also the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma with the installation Resonance Galactica, a project by students Eliana Polvere and Manuela Violi realised within the framework of the Multimedia Design course of Professor Mauro Palatucci.
Resonance Galactica, awarded with the National Arts Award 2023, is an interactive installation that invites the audience to explore contact through a three-dimensional visual translation that evokes elaborate, real-time-generated star galaxies.
The installation consists of a metal rod fixed to a wall, on which viewers are invited to knock. The intensity and position of the touch generate a sound vibration that activates a video projection of complex star formations. These images, astronomical photographs digitally reprocessed in real time, change according to the power of the gesture and the specific point of the knock, creating an immersive and dynamic experience that evolves with the interaction of the audience. The two artists add:
The installation came to life within the course of Prof. Palatucci, who guided us in the operation that leads from an idea to a project. At the heart of our work lies research into artificial intelligence, its relationship with art and the implications it has and will have on the lives of us all.
One of the many areas of AI development is space exploration, from which Resonance Galactica was born, whose code was partly written with the support of AI, leading us to reflect on the new tools available to artists and the question of authorship.
Eliana Polvere and Manuela Violi, in their project Resonance Galactica, have clearly highlighted the importance of research on artificial intelligence, not only as a technical tool but also as a conceptual element that questions the future of art and creativity. They reflected on the implications that AI has and will have on art and everyday life, highlighting how these emerging technologies integrate into practices concerning the role and authorship of artists. The interaction between human and machine thus becomes a fertile ground for the exploration of new expressive and conceptual forms, leading to a reflection on the very nature of art and creativity in the digital age.
