A former paper mill, just outside Rome’s Salario district, is being redeveloped as a cultural space. Inside this building, SPAZIOMENSA – an artist-run space in Rome – was recently opened with the joint exhibition Intermezzo. For a Mythology of the Future featuring two artists, Alessandro Giannì and Lulù Nuti. For a mythology of the future.
Paintings and sculptures are projected into a post-anthropocentric imaginary, sinking into metamorphic hallucinations that are brought to life from the fiery fluid worlds of Alessandro Giannì’s paintings, which study the universe, looking for other horizons – beyond the Earth, beyond the solar system. The two visions come together in the multiple work produced with Litografia Bulla, where the lithograph designed by Giannì is enclosed by Nuti’s two vertical horizons.
“The works on show,” writes Giulia Benassi in the text which accompanies the exhibition, “seem to narrate the interlude in which man is allowed to lose everything, or almost everything: everything excluding the essential. What is essential is the image and the wonder inspired by looking at it.”
The exhibition is part of a cycle of joint solo shows that, starting in February, will regularly fill the spaces of the former paper mill in Rome. Each SPAZIOMENSA artist – Sebastiano Bottaro, Dario Carratta, Marco Eusepi, Alessandro Giannì and Andrea Polichetti – will invite an external artist to interact with their artistic research and space. The interaction between artists belonging to the same context aims to investigate a cultural ecosystem as a place of constantly changing creative processes, opening up a space of contamination between research. Each pair of artists, in collaboration with Litografia Bulla, will create a work that will be displayed in the exhibition. The title chosen by Giannì and Nuti for their joint exhibition is the digital symbol for pause, “II“, indicating that the artists have constructed the exhibition through a process more akin to a dialectical relationship than a true dialogue, finding in pauses, silence and suspension the synthesis of their work.
