From 3 to 6 July, Videocittà, the Festival of Vision and Digital Culture, conceived by Francesco Rutelli and under the creative direction of Francesco Dobrovich, returns in Rome for its eighth edition.
The opening on Thursday 3 July will feature the Italian premiere of Onirica () live by fuse*, who return to the festival after their site-specific installation luna somnium in 2022. On this occasion, they will present a performance that explores the perception of the body in the realm of dreams, generated in real time through the interaction between performers and artificial intelligence.
With an extra day of programming compared to previous editions, Europe’s largest industrial archaeology site, the Gazometro in Rome, once again becomes a hub of cultural innovation and prepares to host four days of majestic installations, video art, video mapping, immersive experiences, audiovisual music shows, talks and AV experiences, already looking ahead to the languages of tomorrow.
Videocittà is an open observatory that promotes excellence in audiovisual and digital communication, giving visibility to the most advanced forms of production and creativity. Since 2018, the festival has expanded its international reach, welcoming over 550 artists, including Oscar winners and winners of the Golden and Silver Lion awards at the Venice Biennale. Videocittà is also a laboratory for emerging talent, many of whom, starting from Italian premieres, have achieved international fame. The 2025 edition celebrates the 800th anniversary of St. Francis’ Canticle of the Creatures and focuses on the Sun as a symbol of life, light and energy. This theme is reflected in the work of the artists involved, who explore the relationship between sustainability, the environment and digital innovation.
With over 22,000 visitors in 2024 and a 150% increase in ticket sales in recent editions, the 2025 edition has already sold out its early bird full passes. The event will welcome an ever-wider audience, with no age limits.
With Eni as Main Partner, the support of Roma Capitale – Assessorato alla Cultura and the support of the Lazio Region and the media partnership of Rai, the 2025 edition concludes the quadrilogy on the relationship between man and nature, after the lunar element (2022), the Earth (2023) and the Galaxy (2024).
As usual, the main attraction of the Festival will be the large site-specific installation that will envelop the Gazometro G4. For the 2025 edition, the intervention on the monument that symbolises contemporary Rome will be entitled Solar and will be entrusted to the internationally renowned Roman artist Quayola. With Solar, the Gazometro will be illuminated with a new and powerful light, celebrating the Sun as the primary source of life, energy and transformation. Produced by Eni, curated by Videocittà in collaboration with The Bentway Toronto, and executive produced by Eventi Italiani, Solar is inspired by the optical phenomenon of crepuscular rays and reproduces an infinite cycle of digital sunrises and sunsets: light becomes living matter, sculpting the darkness and shaping space.
Once again this year, Eni will open the doors of the Ostiense Gasometer Complex, home to the ROAD Technological Innovation District and the Joule Business School. The long-standing collaboration with Videocittà is based on shared values and themes that reflect the company’s strategy. Within this location, innovation and culture become a joint narrative between Eni and the festival. It is precisely this sharing that allows Eni, through Solar, to show how different energies become a single energy in a process of continuous transformation: its companies work together to create an integrated ecosystem of complementary solutions, with the aim of generating a positive and lasting impact and redesigning the future of energy.
Among the new features this year, visitors will be able to choose a time slot to visit the installation, with the requirement to arrive 15 minutes in advance. Plus and Plus Backstage tickets offer unlimited access and skip the line. (For details on tickets and season tickets, visit Videocittà.com)
The MUSIC AUDIO VISUAL SHOWS, curated by Michele Lotti, involve artists whose language is closely linked to the audiovisual world: an alternation of established guests and promising new international and national talents, confirming Videocittà’s innovative vision in 2025.
