THEREFORE WE ARE by Giulia Palombino is the third instalment of the cycle Tempo Imperfetto, curated by Antonello Tolve and Stefania Zuliani. Inspired to a performative criterion taking different shapes according to linguistic modalities of various nature, THEREFORE WE ARE, the new site project Elena Bellantoni has realised for the Museo Archeologico Provinciale di Salerno, is a journey aimed at discovering places and exploring the cultural and historical horizons of the landscape surrounding Salerno.
The work that launches the exhibition is a neon light-writing entitled I Revolt, Therefore We Are, after a phrase Albert Camus coined in his 1951 essay L’homme revolté: this work shows an expressive praxis that represents the artist’s need for sympathetic solidarity, for that moment when «the I opens to the other, finding in her something he thinks it is worth looking after.» In the same vein we can also interpret The Sympathetic Loner, two mirrors facing each other where the shock of being is always also a shock of being-with (Jean-Luc Nancy), a plural singularity, a nos sumus wanting to «forget by heart» the history of the place in order to take care of it.
Set in the Etruscan-Samnite archaeological area of Fratte, The Players is a video which, if on the one hand focuses on the collections of artefacts kept in the Museo Archeologico, on the other features a game between the artist and the art critic, between two minds, and two different ways of thinking.Another key moment of the exhibition is represented by Salt City, a light installation that via a DIA projector casts some meaningful images on a pile of cooking salt, in order to attract the attention on the city of Salerno.
