Seth Price, multidisciplinary post-conceptual artist, presents a series of new works at the Galerie Chantal Crousel. Some belongs to the cycle “Social Space”, a series of paintings based on photographs taken of people on the streets and underground of New York together with strange 3D-modelled objects. These works, which are presented as light boxes and luminous tubes, originated in a series started in 2015 when Price photographed models of various ages, race and sex using a high-tech camera to capture the body from every possible angle.
The resulting data are elaborated by a software very similar to the one employed by Google. The real and the artificial are combined with images manipulated by a software programme and printed on textiles which are then wrapped around tubes or stretched on a steel frame with LED stripes.
Price has always been active in debates on the post-digital through his theoretical and creative engagement and by working with a variety of materials and techniques, including sculpture, painting, drawings, video and installations, but also incorporating textiles and web design.
In his essay Manifesto, Dispersion (2002), Price retraces the different conceptual approaches to diverse media, trying to situate the artist in relation to the art system, finding answers in the ‘distribution’ rather than the ‘production’ process. It was first published as a PDF; later it was edited, expanded and published in different formats such as a CD-rom, printed on a large scale sculpture (Essay with Knots, 2008) and included in anthologies focusing on post-digital art (Mass Effect. Art and the Internet in the Twenty – First Century, The MIT Press, 2015).
Theoretical and aesthetic reflections run parallel to practical experimentation. The works on display represent an additional evolution in the artist’s theoretical reflection which started with Dispersion.
