“605 prepared dc-motors, cardboard boxes” is the first solo show in an Italian museum by the Swiss artist Zimoun, famous for works which combine sound art and the architecture of spaces.
Five rooms in the former Palazzina dei Giardini in Modena will be inhabited by mechanical installations constructed using simple, everyday industrial materials – cardboard boxes, cotton balls, metal wires, wood etc. – fitted with automatic sound- and noise-generation systems. In this way Zimoun explores mechanical rhythm, travelling the fine line of equilibrium between order and chaos. His works are a convergence of the skills of an engineer, an architect, an artisan, a researcher, an arranger and an orchestra conductor.
Curated by Filippo Aldovini, the exhibition is a precursor to the NODE festival of electronic music and live arts, which will take place in Modena from 9th to 12th November. The exhibition is organised and produced by the Galleria Civica di Modena and the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Modena in conjunction with the Associazione Lemniscata and fuse*.
Accompanying the exhibition is the catalogue ZIMOUN.605 prepared dc-motors, cardboard boxes, an artist’s sound book edited by Filippo Aldovini, with text by various authors including Digicult director Marco Mancuso.
NODE is a festival which for the past eight years has worked to bring the visual arts together with music, performance, cinema and new technologies. It involves the entire city, with interactive installations and sound design works by selected international artists.
